Horry County South Carolina

Horry County (pronounced OH-ree) is located in the northeastern corner of South Carolina – on a map it looks like a wedge between North Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the largest county in South Carolina in land area (1,134 square miles), Myrtle Beach is its largest city, tourism is its largest industry, and Conway is its county seat.

A planter of French Huguenot descent,Peter Horry (O-ree) was born in SC ca.1747. A lieutenant colonel in theRevolution and later brigadier generalin the SC Militia, he represented PrinceGeorge Winyah and All Saints parishesin the SC House and Senate. In 1801,Kingston County was renamed Horry District for Peter Horry. He died in1815 and is buried at Trinity EpiscopalChurch in Columbia SC.
